Why E-commerce Stores Are Losing the First Touchpoint with the Customer - and What to Do About It

AI is changing not only how people search for products, but also how they choose them.

Until recently, an online store was where customers made most of their purchasing decisions. They compared products, read descriptions, evaluated prices, and ultimately decided what to buy.

New data from Adobe and Shopify suggests that part of this decision-making process is moving into conversations with artificial intelligence.

Consumers are increasingly asking AI to compare products, recommend the best option, or help them decide what to buy. By the time they reach an online store, many have already made up their minds. This is an important shift to understand: AI is changing not only how people search for products, but also how they decide what to buy-and what not to buy. As a result, AI is having a significant impact on the entire e-commerce funnel. What should businesses know at this stage, and what should they do next?

The Biggest Story Isn't AI Traffic Growth

According to Adobe, traffic from AI sources to U.S. retailers was 138% higher in May than a year earlier. But the most important figure in the study is something else.

Visitors arriving from tools such as ChatGPT and Gemini generated 53% more revenue per visit than users coming from other channels.

Shopify reports a similar trend. According to the platform, visitors referred by AI convert nearly 50% better than organic search traffic, while their average order value is 14% higher.

These figures don't answer whether AI will become the primary traffic source for e-commerce. However, they clearly show that people arriving from AI tools behave differently from typical visitors.

They are likely reaching a website after completing much of the work that previously happened inside the online store itself: comparing products, checking prices across different retailers, reviewing delivery options, and understanding return policies. AI answers many of these questions before customers ever visit your website.

The research supports this conclusion:

  • 62% of respondents would like AI to help them search for and compare products.
  • 56% expect AI to monitor price changes and notify them about special offers.
  • 54% say AI's greatest value is its ability to quickly compare different products.
  • Nearly one in seven respondents says they saved more than $500 over the past year by using AI shopping tools.

Not long ago, this process required opening multiple online stores, reading product descriptions, comparing specifications, and checking prices. Today, much of that work can be completed with a single prompt.

What Does This Mean?

Comparing products has become dramatically easier, making competition more transparent. Strong advertising alone will no longer be enough if the offer itself isn't competitive. Within seconds, shoppers can ask AI to find a better alternative elsewhere.

So What Will Businesses Be Competing For?

For years, digital marketing focused on one primary goal: getting people to visit a website. Everything else-product presentation, comparisons, persuasive messaging, and purchase decisions-happened there.

Today, AI is taking over part of that work.

A customer's first interaction with a brand may happen before they ever visit its website. The first product comparison may happen there as well. In many cases, customers arrive at an online store already knowing what they intend to buy.

This doesn't make websites less important. Their role is changing. Increasingly, the website is where the purchase is completed rather than where the decision is made.

As a result, the nature of competition is changing too. Until now, e-commerce businesses largely competed for clicks. They are now beginning to compete for recommendations. If AI performs the first product comparison, it is no longer enough to simply be discoverable-you need to become a product that AI has reason to recommend.

What Should E-commerce Businesses Do Now?

Step one: Review your product information.

Are your product benefits clear? Are specifications structured consistently? Is it easy to compare different models? If it takes a customer several minutes to understand these differences, AI is likely to struggle as well.

Step two: Evaluate product pages from the perspective of a customer who has already decided what they want.

If shoppers already know what they're looking for, lengthy marketing copy matters less than clear answers. Delivery times, warranty information, return policies, stock availability, and clearly stated product advantages become the deciding factors.

Step three: Start measuring traffic quality, not just traffic volume.

If AI brings fewer visitors but those visitors convert more often and spend more, traffic alone will no longer be a sufficient performance metric. Conversion rate, revenue per visit, and average order value will become increasingly important.

Step four: Regularly check how AI tools present your products.

Which competitors do they mention? Which product strengths do they highlight? What information is missing? Answering these questions can reveal not only how AI perceives your brand, but also what information should be added or improved on your product pages.

It is still too early to predict what share of e-commerce traffic AI will ultimately generate. What is already becoming clear, however, is that AI is changing not only how people search for products, but also how they choose them. In the years ahead, businesses will need to do more than compete for visibility in search results. They will need to become products that AI has a compelling reason to recommend.
